The Pride of Shiner: A Pilgrimage to the Spoetzl Brewery

Spoetzl Brewery Shiner Texas

The "Cleanest Little City in Texas" and the brewery that put it on the map.

The Backstory

In 1909, the residents of Shiner, Texas, were tired of drinking beer shipped in from elsewhere, so they formed the Shiner Brewing Association. However, the magic didn't truly begin until 1914, when a Bavarian immigrant named Kosmos Spoetzl arrived. He brought with him a family recipe for a dark, Bavarian-style lager and a copper kettle. He eventually bought the brewery, gave it his name, and the legend of Shiner Bock was born.

The brewery’s history is a story of Texas-sized resilience. During Prohibition, Spoetzl kept the doors open by making "near beer" and ice. Legend has it he would occasionally "accidentally" leave a few bottles of the real stuff for the locals. Today, while Shiner is shipped to all 50 states, every single drop is still brewed right here in this small town using the water from the same artesian wells Kosmos used over a century ago.

Copper Kettles and Tasting Rooms

The brewery tour at Spoetzl is one of the best in the state. You’ll get to walk through the historic brew house where the massive copper kettles gleam under the lights. You can smell the hops and barley in the air as the staff explains the "Old World" brewing process that hasn't changed much in a hundred years. The facility is surprisingly high-tech today, but the heart of the operation still feels like a family-run business.

After the tour, visitors head to the K. Spoetzl Hospitality Center. Here, you can sample the "family" of Shiner beers, including seasonal releases you might not find in your local grocery store. The outdoor beer garden is the perfect place to sit back, listen to some Texas country music, and soak in the slow pace of life in Lavaca County.

Our Pro-Tip

Do not miss the gift shop. It is the only place in the world where you can find certain Shiner-branded gear and rare collectibles. Our secret move: While you're in town, drive over to Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. It’s one of the famous "Painted Churches" of Texas, featuring breathtaking interior murals that represent the deep heritage of the Shiner community. Also, if you’re hungry, grab a "Shiner-style" sausage from a local market—it pairs perfectly with the brew.

Note: Tours fill up fast, especially on weekends. It’s a good idea to book your spot online in advance to ensure you get to see the kettles!
